Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to perform tasks including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth lived in a slum Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She was a student in the area. However, she left school after just two years to pursue an acting career. She faced many obstacles on the path she chose to pursue. In New York she was hired to do a photo shoot in a crime magazine and drama, however no theater opportunities were offered. After a brief time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit her job. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first ever permanent acting job. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
